5 Things "To Do" to your lawn in April
For more lawn care tips, click here!

1.

With a stiff broom remove all sand from the lawn surface. A blower may also be used. Best to do this when it is dry. The sand, of course, is left from snowplows and in most cases contained salt when spread. It is vitally important to do this first step to curtail possible weed problems down the line.

2. Stay off the lawn.  Do not dethatch or rake. After 2nd mowing or when lawn has completely come out of dormancy, Inspect lawn for thatch. A lawn should have up to 1/2" thatch (Decomposing
grass).

This 1/2" thatch layer helps the turf in the following ways.
1. Provides holding capacity for moisture lessening evaporation.
2. Cools the soil, stimulating stronger growth.
3. Helps prevent sunlight exposure to weed seed.Tip #1

It has been said their is up to 5000 weed seeds in 1 square foot of soil below turf grass. These weed seeds, many that may have been dormant for years are waiting to come up.   Don't give them the chance, never hard rake or dethatch your lawn.  In rare occasion do we find a lawn that needs dethatching.  The best defense or correction is a good program of Watering, Mowing, Fertilization, Weed Control, and Core Aeration.

Pre-Emergent Weed Control
Tired of trying to learn about herbicides? Which ones work for which weeds and at what cost? Which ones are safe for the environment? When should they be applied? How will they affect landscaping and ornamental shrubs?

The single most important weedPre-Emergent Weed Control control treatment for your lawn is a "pre-emergent." This is a treatment applied before the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees - and before the weeds have a chance to start growing.

We recommend and use a high quality product called Dimension. Dimension offers our clients the control of crabgrass and other tough weeds, doesn't stain walks, drives or fences, doesn't wash away, lasts longer, doesn't harm flowers or shrubs and requires less product to treat same area. The benefits of Dimension clearly outweigh the risks of other products for the person who is concerned about the environment and wants to control weeds.

Trust All-American Lawn Care to responsibly use these products.

4. Apply a fertilizer. By applying the correct amounts of fertilizer 3 or 4 times over the course of the season, you will have more consistency. You also will not become a mowing "mad-woman" or "mad-man." Tip #4Many times people will put down a heavy application, and have to mow every 3-4 days for weeks! Please call about our Lawn Care programs or our Do-It-Yourselfer programs, which include free product delivery
5. Replace and/or sharpen your mower blades. This should be done for every 8 hours of mowing. Also, adjust your mower to the Tip #5proper height. Spring and fall - Mow Low - @ 2.5". Summer - Mow High - 3"- 4". A mulching mower is recommended. If you bag clippings all season, you will lose one fertilization treatment.
