Every lawn should have a soil lab test!
By: Jack Armstrong
Whether your lawn is healthy or not, if you have never taken a soil lab test please allow me to explain why it is a good idea.
Why have a soil lab test?
A soil lab test report ( see example) is an overview of what the soil structure is now. The test also allows a professional such as a “Soil Scientist” , to take the data and develop a plan of soil amendments or corrections if needed. Your lawn for the most part is made up of varieties of Kentucky Blue Grass. Blue grass does well in a pH of about 6.5. Blue grass also likes a loose soil that it can drive roots down 3-4”. When roots are shallow ( 1”), the turf can easily have competition from weeds, and be stressed as air temperatures rise into the upper 80’s ( July-Sept )
How often should a soil lab test be taken?
A soil lab test from proper sampling of the soil, sent to a professional testing firm, and read by a Soil Scientist can be done once, and that’s it! Now, a pH test ( using a pH meter) should be done at any sign of discoloring. At All American Lawn Care Co. we do this during our initial evaluation of the lawn, and it is performed as a free service to our active customers through out the season.
After a soil test, what corrections are needed?
Soil Corrections or Amendments, are based on recommendations from a Soil Scientist. When we receive the results of a soil test report ( see example), we forward the test to a non-biased Soil Scientist. The Soil Scientist, will then write recommendations for soil corrections to the lawn. ( see soil test recommendations at bottom of test sheet)
How soon do I see a Greener Lawn?
Our clients and applicators have noticed change in the first two weeks following an amendment. As the season goes on it gets better and better, and the following season becomes the “Wow” factor.
Can I apply these products myself?
Yes you can! We can apply soil amendments for you, or we can deliver the product to your door with simple to follow instructions. Our delivery area is Lakeville and surrounding communities. Please call for details.
If soil corrections are completed, do I have to do again?
No! Once completed you have changed your soil so Blue grass can grow healthy. Now you will water less, have less weeds, and a green healthy lawn you can be proud of!
What is the cost of a Professional Soil Lab Test?
Usually under $100.00. Soil Corrections can vary from $60- $300 depending upon test results, and lawn size. Larger lawn’s or lawns with major problems can be more.
